— Pre-Purchase Exams —

The goal of a pre-purchase exam is to establish the health of the horse and to identify possible issues that would hinder future performance. Your veterinarian evaluates the risk associated with the purchase for the animal’s intended use, however they will not be able to make any guarantees for its future health.

The pre-purchase examination gives the potential buyer as much knowledge about the horse as possible. The exam typically includes a full review of any medical history, a full physical exam, a gait evaluation, flexion test, and bloodwork and radiographs as determined by the veterinarian.

A thorough pre-purchase exam can include the following:

  • Diagnostic tests & imaging

  • Reproductive exam, if applicable

  • Behavioral assessment

  • Performance history & suitability

  • Documentation & recommendations

  • General health examination

  • Detailed physical examination

  • Musculoskeletal assessment

  • Movement assessment

  • Neurological examination
